Intro by The Food Channel

Barley Water: A Boon For The Kidneys and Your Waistline
'Which grain is extremely low in calories, does wonders for the kidneys and may even trim your waistline?
(...)
The core ingredient in this highly useful grain is beta-glucan that is also found in oat bran. Explaining it's benefits nutritionist Aruna Kulkarni elaborates, "Barley is packed with insoluble fibre which retains water. So it flushes out intestinal contents with great speed. This also minimises the risk of cancer, since the possibility of harmful elements accumulating in the intestines is less. It is also a good cure for digestive problems like constipation."'

Institute for Justice takes case of paleo blogger charged over giving people advice on what to eat
'Can the government throw you in jail for offering advice on the Internet about what people should buy at the grocery store?
That is exactly the claim made by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition. And that is why today diabetic blogger Steve Cooksey of Stanley, N.C. has teamed up with the Institute for Justice (IJ) to file a major First Amendment lawsuit against the State Board in federal court.'

Fighting Fibromyalgia Naturally
'Fibromyalgia causes symptoms that include aching muscles, tender skin, fatigue, flu-like symptoms and mental fogginess that leaves sufferers unable to function normally in everyday life. Fortunately, for those who don't want to resort to experimenting with medication to find a solution, there are a few natural remedies and lifestyle changes that may offer relief to fibromyalgia sufferers.
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, about five million Americans aged 18 or older are affected by fibromyalgia. For many, symptoms come and go, making diagnosis difficult and finding an effective treatment option complicated. Because it isn't a disease with easy-to-identify symptoms and a single effective treatment method, coping with fibromyalgia can be challenging.'

Chilling Statistics: What Are We Doing To Ourselves And Our Children?
'In four words, "we are killing ourselves." Each successive generation is sicker and more diseased than its predecessor. Can Pomegranate Keep You From Going Under The Knife?
'Anyone who drinks pomegranate juice, or is lucky enough to eat one fresh, can understand why it is so effective at cleansing the circulatory system. Nature certainly planted enough poetic visual clues there for us: its juice looks like blood, and it does resemble a multi-chambered heart, at least when you consider its appearance in comparison to most other fruits.'

Paleo for Autoimmune Illness
'I have a special interest in working with people who experience chronic pain. As happens with many people, it took my own experience to propel me to study and learn more about how to best help this patient population. In 2007, I became very ill with what was later diagnosed as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
This is an autoimmune illness (AI) caused by the body mounting an attack on the thyroid gland in an attempt to destroy it. For those who have not heard of this illness, the thyroid is a major part of the endocrine system. It is a gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body.'

Carrot Slaw
'I’ve only eaten this by itself so far and it is delicious! To be honest, I don’t unusually think of carrots being able to hold their own but they manage to shine in this yummy recipe. The citrus and cranberries give it a great sweet kick as well so I think I will be putting these on some veggie dogs later this week (and for sure on my usual veggie sandwiches).'

HEALTH BENEFITS OF JAPANESE NOODLES
'Japanese pastas have unique characteristics and health promoting properties that are not found in traditional Western-style pasta. For example, buckwheat, the main ingredient of soba, is a primitive grain that is rarely eaten in the United States. However, buckwheat is the best, and in some cases the only, source of some bio-compounds that are vital to the healthy functioning of cells and enzymes.
This is why adding soba, particularly 100% buckwheat soba, to your diet can have a positive effect on your health.'

Beta-Carotene: Why Most of Your Vitamins Should Come From Food, Not Supplements
'One mantra we often hear from the natural health industry is "take your supplements." While a high quality supplement may provide you with some vitamins and minerals that you may be deficient in, it will never replace a well balanced diet and the delivery system that nature intended. A perfect example is the dark side of beta carotene intake.
Consumption of high amounts of beta-carotene could pose a health risk to people by blocking the action of vitamin A rather than enhancing it, according to new research.
"The kind of dosages of beta-carotene we see in health supplements could be harmful, especially since most people believe that more is better," said nutritionist Albert Meades. "However, even natural foods containing high-amounts of beta-carotene can also cause harm if consumed in excess, for example juicing carrots multiple times per day...everyday," he added.'
